Thuburbo Maius (Colonia Julia Aurelia Commoda)

In several locations around the site, including within the Capitolium, olive presses were installed after Thuburbo Maius went into decline. Often sections of columns or other large blocks of masonry would be used to provide the weight needed to press the olives.

View through the southern entrance into the town's amphitheatre. In common with many other smaller amphitheatres the arena was mainly constructed by excavating a suitable site, in this case the top of a small hill and a relatively small amount of additional masonry used to complete the structure.

As part of a major project supported by the Getty Museum several of the mosaics at the site were being restored to reflect their condition when originally discovered.
